When it comes to driving drunk, people come up with all kinds of rationalizations to engage in the behavior. Some of the classic qualifiers include:
- “I’m only buzzed.”
- “I’m high, not drunk.”
- “I’ve sobered up by now.”
- “I’ll chew some gum and they’ll never know.”
Unfortunately, no matter how sober your may think you are, even one drink or one hit can land you in the tank. Most folks also believe that you if keep the drinking or smoking to a minimum it means you will avoid a DUI arrest. “Well, if I’m not exactly at .08%, I’m all good, right?”
Wrong. Unfortunately, this is the farthest thing from the truth. If arresting officers have reasonable cause to believe you are a menace to the road due to the fact you are under the influence, they can arrest you. But what should you do if your drunk-logic loses out to local law enforcement? What if you’ve walked the line, gave them a breath-test and all signs point to your arrest?
Keep. Your. Mouth. Shut.
Let me say that again – don’t say a word. Let their officers conduct their arrest and ask for an attorney. The more you plead innocence, the more you try to explain your way out of the situation, the deeper a hole you’re digging. Every word you say to an arresting officer is being recorded and will most certainly be used against you later on. So, keep quiet, call an attorney, and sit tight till you are bailed out. The last thing you want to do is use more of your drunk-assumptions and rationalizations to get you in more trouble.
