It is no secret that Orange County is particularly tough on DUI offenders. This also goes for individuals who get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs. Keep in mind that drugs can mean a variety of possible things — from marijuana to prescribed painkillers. Operating a car while impaired in Orange County is a bad idea, especially considering the District Attorney’s latest news.
The Office of Traffic Safety recently awarded the Office of the Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) a large grant designed to help O.C. courts build up the their Alcohol and Drug Impairment Vertical Prosecution Program. The initiative is designed to help law enforcement agents in the county arrest and prosecute drivers who use drugs. The $818,824 grant will allow the OCDA to expand their operations and shore up existing tools. The grant adds to the $2 million in grant money they’ve received over the past decade. The money will also be used to create an educational program that helps prosecutors and police officers understand issues connected with impaired driving cases.
The county was able to get the grant due to their aggressive stance on driving under the influence of drug (DUID) cases. Over the past year, OCDA prosecuted over 1,300 individuals arrested for DUID. Over 1,100 of these people were convicted.
