The incident was over as quickly as it happened. Around 10:00pm on June 28, a 26 year-old Cypress man was putting gas into his vehicle, at the Mobile Gas Station along Seal Beach Boulevard, when out of nowhere he was attacked by what video surveillance showed to be another man with a tire iron. Within moments, the attacker had run off and the victim was left with lacerations to his head, as well as a black out. It took two weeks of investigation and an anonymous tip, but police finally caught up with the assailant – a 17 year-old boy in the Buena Park neighborhood. Seal Beach police suspect that due to the nature of the crime and the savagery involved, the person who provided the tip was “probably a bit nervous to come forward and tell us exactly what they knew.”
As reported by CBS LA, police believe that the victim was chosen at random, with the intention of stealing the man’s vehicle. This unfortunately has left the individual shaken “I’m still like looking over my shoulder at night,” he said, “I’m definitely being a lot more precautions when I’m out and about.” The attackers identity was withheld from the press due to his age. However, authorities indicate that he faces aggravated assault charges and could potentially be tried in adult court. Under California Penal Code 245(a)(1), the attacker could face up to four years in state prison and a strike on his criminal record.
If you have a child who is facing charges as a juvenile, it is critical that you retain a qualified and experienced counselor. When charged, juveniles face a number of different legal challenges that adults do not. It is important to speak with an attorney that fully grasps these nuances and is able provide effective counsel. Don’t let one mistake ruin your chances at a potentially successful future.
