Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and even into the 90s, few radio personalities were as beloved as Casey Kasem. His strong voice and easing going nature defined a generation. From “American Top 40” to Scooby Doo, Kasem was a major part of pop culture for over four decades. The legendary personality was laid to rest in 2014, but not without controversy. Now, Kasem’s children are claiming their father was the victim of wrongful death and are pointing the finger at his widow – Jean Kasem.
Three of Mr. Kasem’s children, along with his brother, have filed a wrongful death suit to the tune of $250,000 in Los Angeles Superior Court. Their suits accuses Kasem’s window Jean of causing the family incredible amounts of emotional stress that shortened their father’s life. According to the Orange County Register, the suit states “Casey’s early death occurred as a direct and proximate result of Jean’s neglect and physical abuse.”
This case comes on the heels of LA prosecutor’s decision last year not to file charges of elder abuse against Jean Kasem. At the time, officials believed they could not prove without a doubt that Mrs. Kasem’s actions lead to the radio host’s death.
