Anaheim Hills Teacher Creates DUI Checkpoint Tracking App, Huntington Beach PD Displays Eye-Catching Anti-DUI Ad

By Michael Guisti on January 5, 2015

Orange County, CA — This time of year, law enforcement is especially concerned with DUI enforcement. With so many parties celebrating Christmas and the New Year, more drivers take to Southern California's streets and highways after having too much to drink, leading to traffic collisions and arrests. Here are two stories about local efforts to curb drinking and driving.

Geno Rose, a resident of Anaheim Hills, worked together with a San Diego software developer to create a smartphone app called DUI Dodger. The app allows users to mark DUI checkpoints on a map for other users to see. The app also includes a simulated walk the line test with a BAC calculator. Rose says he created the app so that sober drivers could plan their trips around DUI checkpoints to make it easier to get around and to deter people from driving if they've had too much to drink. However, the app has been criticized because of the potential for misuse. The app costs $2.99.

This holiday season the Huntington Beach Police Department has campaigned against drunk driving with a rolling billboard, a patrol car that has been painted to resemble a taxi on the back end with the slogan "Choose Your Ride" on the side. The police want to get out the message that it's better to get a cab ride home than get picked up on DUI charges. This year they have arrested more than 600 people on suspicion of DUI and alcohol was determined to be a factor in 330 collisions and 10 deaths. A DUI enforcement officer said the car was meant as a "reminder to drink responsibly and choose your best mode of transportation."

Even for a first time offense, a conviction on DUI charges can be extremely inconvenient with court fees of up to $1800, mandatory traffic school, at least 48 hours of jail time, a 6 month license suspension, and up to 5 years of probation. However, it is important to remember that you can fight a DUI charge in court.
